Anyone who respects the game of basketball had to be saddened by the loss this week of the great Pete Newell, a Hall of Fame coach who taught thousands about the game through his books, camps, and conversations. Coach Newell won an NIT title at the University of San Francisco in 1949, an NCAA title at Cal in 1959, and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1960. In his teams’ final eight games against John Wooden and UCLA, Coach Newell went 8-0. [How many coaches can claim that?] Bobby Knight, one of Coach Newell’s closest friends, has described Coach Newell, a former NBA GM with the Rockets and Lakers, as “one of the greatest defensive influences on the game ever.” Over the last couple of days, I’ve spent time gathering quotes from Coach Newell from old newspaper clippings.

I was minding my own business when I was transported to a parallel Earth. I encountered the non-me, a guy, who I thought was pretty cute, living in a house that was rather similar in shape and size to the house I lived in when I was in high school. The furniture was better located in the rooms however, and overall, the house was better decorated. The guy was in high school, as was I, but we were also both my current age.

“In My Sleep” is a very good thriller starring Philip Winchester whose character has a very rare sleep disorder where he ends up doing things while asleep. When he wakes up covered in blood and people end up dying, that’s when things start spinning out of control. The next visiting demonstrator is Pat Stevens of FlyTek who will be tying Pike flies and quill bodied flies. Pat will be bringing with him some materials for anyone who would like too buy them for tying the patterns including Bug bond kits which he will also be using during the demo. Please be aware that we shall be meeting downstairs towards the right of the bar area as you come in the main entrance. There is a large screen TV which Tony has managed to connect up for the demo to maintain the excellent quality that has become the norm for club demonstrations.

Recently, I was asked by a mom if her six year old should be able to wipe herself after using the restroom. My answer was, “all children need to be trained to take care of their basic hygiene needs as soon as they become potty trained.” For one, it’s good hygiene, and second, your child will not always be in your presence when using the restroom. Therefore, parents must teach their children to wipe themselves in order to not rely on someone else.
